Abstract:

Pinning of vortex lines in high temperature superconductors can be enhanced dramatically by correlations in the distribution of the pins. We study the nonlinear I-V characteristic of a model high temperature superconductor with columnar defects by nonequilibrium Monte Carlo simulation of the dynamics of a gas of interacting vortex lines in a random medium. Unlike previous work our simulation directly probes for the first time the vortex degrees of freedom, and takes screening of the vortex lines into account. From finite-size scaling we determine the previously unknown dynamical exponent z, and the exponent y in the I-V characteristic V ~ I y at the glass transition.
